Audio Plays Once
You cannot replay the audio in the real IELTS test. Train yourself to keep moving even if you miss one answer.
Strategy
Look at the next question immediately after a missed answer.
Use Preview Time
Before each section starts, read the questions quickly and predict what kind of answer each blank needs.

A blank after "$" needs a number. A blank after "at" may need a time or place.

Look for
- names
- numbers
- dates
- places
- nouns
- adjectives

Tip
Prediction helps your ear recognize the answer when it comes.
Underline Keywords
Underline names, places, dates, and important nouns in the questions. These guide you through the audio.
Warning
Expect synonyms. The speaker may not use the exact words from the question.
Notice Word Limits
Read instructions such as "ONE WORD ONLY" or "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER" before listening.
Tip
A correct idea with too many words is still marked wrong.
During the Audio
Follow the Order
Answers usually come in question order. Use this to know when you have missed something and when to move on.
Example
If you hear the answer for question 14, stop waiting for question 13 and continue.
Watch for Distractors
Speakers often correct themselves or reject an earlier option. The first answer you hear may not be final.
Example
"The meeting was Tuesday, sorry, Wednesday" means Wednesday is the answer.
Write Short Notes
Write enough to remember the answer, then clean it up during checking time. Do not spend too long making notes perfect while the audio continues.

Spelling Matters
Incorrect spelling is marked wrong. Pay special attention to common names, months, addresses, and academic words.
Practice
Drill letters, names, and place spellings regularly.
Numbers and Dates
Listen for double numbers, prices, dates, times, room numbers, and phone numbers.
Tip
Write numbers as digits when possible to reduce spelling mistakes.
Singular and Plural
A missing plural "s" can make an answer wrong. Use grammar around the blank to decide if the answer should be singular or plural.
Example
"several ___" usually needs a plural noun.
Common Mistakes
Stopping After a Missed Answer
If you miss one answer, continue with the next question. Losing focus can turn one missed answer into several.
Trusting the First Option
IELTS often includes changed plans, corrections, and rejected choices. Wait for the final meaning before deciding.
Ignoring Grammar
The sentence around the blank often tells you whether the answer needs a noun, adjective, verb, singular form, or plural form.
