IELTS preparation by country

IELTS preparation built around where you are starting

Your test type, destination, and official next steps can vary with your goal. Choose a country guide for practical, sourced advice, then turn it into a balanced four-skill study plan.

Start with five decisions

Country information matters, but a useful preparation plan begins with your test, required result, current level, and available time.

  1. Step 1

    Choose the right IELTS test

Academic is commonly used for higher education and professional registration. General Training is commonly used for migration, work, or study below degree level.

  2. Step 2

    Confirm the score you need

Check both the overall band and minimum component scores with the organisation that will receive your result.

  3. Step 3

    Set a realistic test date

Work backwards from application deadlines and leave time for results, document submission, and a possible retake.

  4. Step 4

    Take a timed diagnostic

Use one realistic attempt in each skill to separate language gaps from task-format and timing problems.

  5. Step 5

    Build a weekly review cycle

Balance all four skills, but spend extra review time on the errors that repeatedly limit your target score.

Academic or General Training?

Listening and Speaking are the same in both tests. Reading and Writing use different material and tasks, so confirm which result your receiving organisation accepts before booking.

Check your local delivery format

IELTS announced a move away from paper-based testing from mid-2026, with exact timelines varying by market and a Writing on Paper option planned in selected locations. Confirm the available format with your booking provider and practise using the same input method.
