IELTS Speaking Part 2 Practice
Practice long-turn cue card answers with clear structure and enough detail.
Whole part
3–4 minutes
Preparation
1 minute
You can make notes.
Long turn
1–2 minutes
The examiner stops you when time is up.
Part 2 Focus
The task card gives a topic and points to include. You have one minute to prepare before speaking for one to two minutes.
- Choose one clear person, place, object, event, or experience quickly.
- Turn your notes into a route: context, main details, development, and reflection.
- Use the card points for coverage, but connect them naturally instead of reading them as a checklist.
Use the Preparation Minute
Write keywords rather than sentences. Full sentences take too long and encourage reading or memorization.
- Set the scene: who, where, when, and why this example fits.
- Add two or three moments, features, or reasons you can describe specifically.
- Reserve a final note for why the topic mattered or how you felt about it.
From cue card to one-minute notes
Prompt
Describe a place you enjoy visiting. Say where it is, when you go there, what you do, and explain why you enjoy it.
Improved response
Notes: riverside park — Sunday mornings — cycle with cousin — quiet before city wakes — coffee kiosk — contrast with busy week — feel reset.
The notes create a sequence and include specific details and reflection. They are short enough to scan while speaking and flexible enough to sound natural.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping after covering the bullets briefly.Develop details with a moment, description, reason, contrast, or consequence.
- Writing full sentences during preparation.Use a small number of keywords and arrows so you can plan the route quickly.
- Repeating the same idea in different words.Move through a timeline or distinct aspects of the topic.
