• while: More common in spoken English; can also show contrast.
• in contrast: More formal; often used at the start of a sentence.
• however: Used to show a contrast between two separate sentences.

Errores comunes

• Whereas the first graph shows an increase, but the second shows a decrease. to Whereas the first graph shows an increase, the second shows a decrease.. Do not use 'but' after 'whereas'; 'whereas' already shows contrast.
• The price of oil rose sharply, whereas the price of gas fell sharply. to The price of oil rose sharply, whereas the price of gas fell.. Avoid repeating 'sharply' unnecessarily; keep the sentence parallel but concise.
• He likes football, whereas she likes tennis. to He likes football, whereas she prefers tennis.. Use parallel verb forms for better style; 'likes' and 'prefers' are both present tense.
